In this guide8 sections

Apple's iPhone event, Surprise and Shine, was held on Wednesday 9 September 2026, and the phone already in your pocket is about to become the most volatile asset you own. Every launch cycle follows the same pattern: supply of used iPhones spikes, buyers get choosier, and the models closest to the new flagship lose value fastest.

This guide covers what Apple announced, what your current iPhone is worth today, and the specific timing decisions that protect the most money.

What Apple Announced on 9 September 2026#

Apple confirmed the Pro models, their storage tiers, colours and dates at the keynote. The rows marked reported below are still reporting, not fact, and the company has moved launch plans before.

As of 9 September 2026, the picture is:

What Timing Confidence
Keynote ("Surprise and Shine") Wednesday 9 September 2026, 18:00 UK Confirmed by Apple
Pre-orders Saturday 12 September, 1 p.m. UK Confirmed by Apple
On sale Friday 18 September Confirmed by Apple
iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max Announced 9 September 2026 Confirmed by Apple; 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB; black, silver, glacier and burgundy
Foldable iPhone Reported for October at the earliest Consistently reported, name unclear ("iPhone Ultra" rumoured; reported name: iPhone Duo)
Standard iPhone 18, 18e, Air 2 Spring 2027 Not announced on 9 September; widely reported split of the lineup

UK prices are confirmed: the iPhone 18 Pro starts at £1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at £1,299 for 256GB, £100 more than the 17 Pro Max's launch price at the same storage, and the 2TB Pro Max tops out at £2,499. If you are weighing the jump, our iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max piece works through who should upgrade and who should hold.

That spring 2027 row is the one most people miss, and it changes the maths for a lot of UK buyers. If you were waiting to buy a standard iPhone 18 this autumn, it was not announced on 9 September, and current reporting says it is not coming until spring 2027.

What Your Current iPhone Is Worth Today#

These are our top pristine quotes at the time of writing (9 September 2026). They are the ceiling for a flawless, unlocked device at the highest storage tier — your exact figure depends on model, storage and condition.

Your iPhone Top quote (pristine)
iPhone 17 Pro Max £905
iPhone 17 Pro £741
iPhone 16 Pro Max £711
iPhone 16 Pro £611
iPhone 15 Pro Max £511
iPhone 17 £495
iPhone Air £477
iPhone 16 £476
iPhone 15 Pro £441
iPhone 14 Pro Max £401
iPhone 15 £356
iPhone 13 Pro Max £331
iPhone 14 £261
iPhone 13 £231
iPhone 12 £156
iPhone 11 £108

Prices move with the market — these are a snapshot, not a promise. Check the live number for your exact device before you plan around it.

How condition changes the number#

Condition is the single biggest multiplier after the model itself. Our grades work out roughly like this:

Grade What it means Roughly
Pristine Indistinguishable from new, no marks 100%
Good Light wear, no cracks, fully working 85%
Fair Visible scratches or dents, fully working 70%
Poor Cracked, faulty, or not powering on ~26%

The jump from Fair to Poor is the expensive one. On an iPhone 17 Pro Max that gap is the difference between roughly £633 and roughly £235 — one drop, close to £400 gone. Which is why the advice below matters more than any timing strategy.

The Money Is in Timing, Not Haggling#

Here is the pattern that repeats every September. Before the keynote, used iPhone supply is normal and demand is steady. Within days of the announcement, a large number of people decide to upgrade at once. Trade-in supply floods the market. Recyclers and private buyers can afford to be picky, and prices for the previous generation soften.

The effect is strongest on the models that compete most directly with the new phones — so this year, on the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and to a lesser degree the 16 Pro line.

If your iPhone is older — a 12 or a 13 — the launch effect is real but much gentler. Those phones have already absorbed several launch cycles. Their value decays slowly and steadily rather than stepping down.

Your Three Options, Honestly Compared#

Route Best for The catch
Apple Trade In Buying direct from Apple Credit, not cash — locked to Apple's price and their store
Carrier trade-in People taking a new contract Value often arrives as bill credit spread over 24–36 months
Private sale (eBay, Marketplace) Pristine, high-value handsets Fees, scams, chargebacks, and you handle returns
Buyback service Speed, certainty and cash You need to describe condition accurately

There is no universally correct answer. A pristine iPhone 17 Pro Max will usually fetch more on a well-run private sale than anywhere else — if you are willing to deal with buyers, postage risk and the occasional attempted scam. If you would rather have a fixed number, a tracked label and money in your account within days, a buyback service wins on everything except the headline figure.

Cash also beats credit for flexibility. Apple credit only spends at Apple. Cash lets you take a carrier deal, buy refurbished, or simply keep it.

There is a fifth route that gets missed: if your carrier upgrade hands you a new iPhone 18 Pro you do not actually need, a sealed, unopened phone grades as Pristine and can be sold for cash. That is a different decision from selling your old phone, and we cover it in selling your iPhone upgrade.

What to Do Right Now#

  1. Find your exact model and storage

Settings → General → About. "iPhone 17 Pro" and "iPhone 17 Pro Max" are different phones with a £164 gap at the top storage tier — guessing costs real money.

  2. Check battery health

Settings → Battery → Battery Health. Pristine needs battery health above 90%, Good above 80%; below 80% grades as Poor. Note the number now so there are no surprises.

  3. Get a quote and lock it

A locked quote protects you from market movement while you wait for your new phone. Ours holds for 21 days, which covers pre-orders on Saturday 12 September and the first deliveries from Friday 18 September.

  4. Protect the phone

Case and screen protector on until the moment you sell. The Fair-to-Poor drop is the single most expensive thing that can happen between now and the day you post it.

  5. Back up, but do not wipe yet

Back up to iCloud or a computer now. Only turn off Find My and erase the device once you are ready to post it.

  6. Post it when your new phone arrives

Send the old handset once the replacement is in your hand — not before.

Before You Sell: The Reset Checklist#

Once your replacement has arrived and your data is transferred:

  • Back up to iCloud or a Mac/PC, and confirm the backup completed
  • Transfer or export WhatsApp separately — it does not always come across cleanly
  • Sign out of your Apple Account
  • Turn off Find My iPhone — a device still locked to your account cannot be processed
  • Erase All Content and Settings
  • Remove the physical SIM if you have one
  • Cancel or transfer any eSIM

Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money#

  • Waiting to see the new phones before checking your value. Checking a quote costs nothing and commits you to nothing. The announcement did not change what your current phone is worth today — but the fortnight afterwards might.
  • Selling before your replacement arrives. Being phoneless for a week is how people end up accepting a bad deal out of impatience.
  • Cheap third-party repairs right before selling. A non-genuine screen or battery can reduce a quote by more than the repair saved you. If it works, leave it.
  • Overstating condition. An optimistic self-grade just means a revised offer after inspection. Describe it as a stranger would.

Frequently asked questions

When is the iPhone 18 coming out in the UK?

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its Surprise and Shine event on Wednesday 9 September 2026. Pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September at 1 p.m. UK time, and the phones go on sale on Friday 18 September. The standard iPhone 18 was not announced on 9 September and is widely reported to have moved to spring 2027.

Should I trade in my iPhone before or after the iPhone 18 launch?

Before, if you can. Trade-in values for recent iPhones usually soften in the weeks after an Apple launch because supply rises sharply. If you need your phone until the new one arrives, lock a quote early instead — a TechLoop quote is held for 21 days.

How much is my iPhone worth right now?

It depends on the model, storage and condition. At the time of writing (9 September 2026) our top pristine quotes ran from £108 for an iPhone 11 up to £905 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Prices move with the market, so check the live quote for your exact device.

Is it better to use Apple Trade In or a buyback service?

Apple Trade In gives you credit against an Apple purchase, which is convenient if you are buying direct. A buyback service pays cash, which you can spend anywhere — including on a carrier deal or a refurbished handset. Compare both before committing.

Does a cracked screen kill my trade-in value?

No, but it reduces it. Damaged iPhones are priced on repair and parts value rather than retail desirability. We still buy cracked and faulty iPhones — you just want to avoid adding damage in the weeks before you sell.
