Sell Your iPhone Upgrade for Cash (UK): Sealed, Unopened, Paid as Pristine

Got a new iPhone through a carrier upgrade you do not need? A sealed, unopened phone grades as Pristine. How to sell it for cash in the UK, safely.

Sell Your iPhone Upgrade for Cash (UK): Sealed, Unopened, Paid as Pristine
In this guide8 sections

Every September, plenty of people in the UK end up holding a brand-new iPhone they do not actually want. A contract renewal that came with a "free" upgrade. A gift from someone who guessed wrong. Two pre-orders where one would have done.

If that is you, the good news is simple. A sealed, unopened iPhone grades as Pristine at TechLoop, and selling it is easier than you might think. This guide covers who this is for, what a sealed handset gets today, the checks we run, and how to post a high-value phone without losing sleep.

Who This Is For#

"Sell my upgrade" covers a few different people.

The contract upgrade. Your carrier offered a new handset with a renewal. You took it because refusing felt like leaving money on the table, but your current phone is fine.

The gift. Wrong colour, wrong storage, or you simply did not need one. Returning a gift is awkward. Selling it is not.

The duplicate order. Pre-order day is chaotic. Two orders went through, and one arrived that you never meant to keep.

Upgrade regret. The box is still sealed, but the excitement has gone. This one splits in two:

  • Inside the returns window, a refund from the retailer is usually the cleanest route and gets you the full purchase price back. Check the deadline before you do anything else.
  • Past the returns window, or if the phone came through a contract you cannot unwind, selling it is what turns it into cash.

Why a Sealed Phone Grades as Pristine#

Our grades run Pristine, Good, Fair and Poor. Roughly, Good pays 85% of Pristine, Fair pays 70%, and Poor around 26%.

A sealed, unopened phone sits at the top of that ladder for two reasons. It has never had an Apple Account on it, so Activation Lock, the number one reason a used trade-in stalls, cannot be on. And there is no wear to grade: no scratches, no battery cycles, no debate about "light marks".

When you get your quote, pick Pristine. That is the grade a sealed unit is paid at. We do not ask you to break the wrap to prove anything.

On an iPhone 17 Pro Max at the 2TB tier, the ladder looks like this:

Grade Roughly worth
Pristine (sealed counts here) £905
Good £769
Fair £633
Poor £235

Every step down that table is a phone that was opened, used and marked. A sealed one skips all of it.

What a Sealed iPhone Gets Right Now#

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on Wednesday 9 September 2026. Pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September at 1 p.m. UK time and the phones go on sale on Friday 18 September, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Quotes for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max open once the models are live on our site.

Until then, the clearest guide is what a sealed current flagship earns. Our live Pristine quotes at the time of writing (9 September 2026), by storage:

Sealed handset Pristine quote
iPhone 17 Pro Max 2TB £905
iPhone 17 Pro Max 1TB £841
iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB £801
iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB £696
iPhone 17 Pro 1TB £741
iPhone 17 Pro 512GB £701
iPhone 17 Pro 256GB £661
iPhone 17 512GB £495
iPhone Air 1TB £477

Storage is the detail people get wrong. It is printed on the box label next to the IMEI, so read it from there rather than guessing. Prices move with the market; these are a snapshot, not a promise.

The Checks We Run#

A sealed box is strong evidence, but we still check every phone.

IMEI and blacklist status. Every IMEI goes through an independent database check for blacklisting, loss and theft reports and network status. On a sealed phone it almost always comes back clean.

Activation Lock. On a used phone we have to confirm Find My is off. On a sealed one there has never been an Apple Account to lock it. Do not set it up "just to check it works": that adds an account you then have to remove, and an opened phone has to earn Pristine at inspection rather than getting it by default.

Carrier finance. This is the honest part. If the phone came through a contract, check whether the handset is yours to sell and settle any balance first. The contract stays yours whether or not you keep the phone. A network can block a handset later if the finance behind it goes unpaid, and that block lands on whoever owns it by then. We check for it, and we cannot buy a phone that is blacklisted or reported.

Network lock. Most UK handsets now ship unlocked, but not all. The quote asks, and a locked phone is worth less. If you are not sure, your carrier's account page usually says.

Paperwork to Keep#

Three things, none of them hard:

  1. The receipt or order confirmation. Screenshot it. It shows the phone is yours to sell.
  2. The IMEI from the box label. The barcode label on the outside carries the IMEI, serial number and storage. Photograph it before you post.
  3. Your carrier paperwork, if it came through a contract. Know exactly what you agreed to pay and for how long, because that does not change when the phone leaves your hands.

Sell Now, Post When It Arrives#

The awkward bit about launch season is timing. Your upgrade might be on order, in the post, or promised for a date the carrier has not confirmed. Meanwhile the market is moving.

A TechLoop quote is locked for 21 days. Get your price the day the phone is confirmed, hold it, and post the handset when it lands. If the market softens in between, that is our problem rather than yours.

This matters most for a sealed flagship. In the weeks after an Apple launch, near-identical handsets reach the resale market in large numbers because so many people upgrade at once. That extra supply is what pushes prices down. A lock taken early sidesteps it.

  1. Read the box label

Model, storage and IMEI are all on the outside. No need to open anything.

  2. Get your quote and pick Pristine

Sealed and unopened is Pristine. Choose it, and say whether the phone is unlocked.

  3. Lock the price

It holds for 21 days. Put the expiry in your calendar the same day.

  4. Choose how it reaches us

Free tracked Royal Mail label, free doorstep collection across Wiltshire (SN postcodes), or drop it off at Cheney Manor in Swindon.

  5. Post when the phone is in your hands

Not before. A locked price only counts if the phone reaches us inside the window.

  6. Get paid

Bank transfer the same working day after inspection.

How to Post a Sealed Phone Safely#

You are sending a high-value item through the post. Two minutes of care removes almost all of the risk.

  • Use our free tracked Royal Mail label. Tracked end to end, with proof of posting at the counter. Keep that receipt until we confirm arrival.
  • Keep the Apple box sealed and put it inside a padded mailer. The retail box is not designed to be the outer packaging. A mailer stops corner damage and scuffed wrap.
  • Do not write "iPhone" on the outside. Our label has everything the courier needs.
  • Send only the sealed box. No case, no accessories, no notes.
  • Local? Skip the post. Free doorstep collection across SN postcodes, or drop it off in Swindon.

Your Routes, Honestly Compared#

Three real options once the returns window has closed.

Route What you get What you carry
Private sale (eBay, Marketplace) A higher headline price on a good day Seller fees, postage, buyer returns, "not as described" disputes, payment holds, your time
Buyback quote A fixed number, locked for 21 days, paid after inspection Describing the phone accurately (easy when it is sealed)
Keep it A spare phone It loses value every month in the drawer, fastest in the weeks after a launch

On a sealed flagship the private route can pay more on paper. What it does not give you is certainty: a buyer can return the phone inside the platform's window, claim it arrived opened, or dispute the payment, and fees come off the top. We go deeper in eBay vs buyback.

A buyback quote is the opposite trade. The headline can be lower than a lucky private sale, but the number is fixed before the phone leaves your house, and there is no buyer to manage.

Keeping it is the quiet loser. A sealed phone is usually worth the most on the day it arrives, and a little less each week after the next keynote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a sealed, unopened iPhone I got as an upgrade?

Yes. A sealed, unopened iPhone grades as Pristine at TechLoop, our highest grade. Pick Pristine when you get your quote, keep the seal intact, and post it in the original box inside a padded mailer. We pay by bank transfer the same working day after inspection.

How much is a sealed iPhone 17 Pro Max worth in the UK?

Our live Pristine quote for an iPhone 17 Pro Max runs up to £905 at the 2TB tier, with the 256GB model at £696, at the time of writing (9 September 2026). Prices move with the market, so check the live number for your exact storage before you plan around it.

Can I sell an iPhone that is still on a carrier contract or finance plan?

Check whether the handset is yours to sell and settle any balance first; the contract stays between you and the carrier whether or not you keep the phone. A phone with unpaid finance behind it can be blocked by the network later, and that lands on whoever owns it by then. We run an IMEI check on every phone and cannot buy one that is blacklisted or reported.

When can I sell an iPhone 18 Pro Max to TechLoop?

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at its keynote on Wednesday 9 September 2026. Quotes open once the models are live on our site. Once live, a sealed unit is quoted at the Pristine rate for its storage tier, and the 21-day price lock applies as normal.

Do I need to open the box to sell my upgrade?

No, and you should not. A sealed phone has never been activated and never had an Apple Account on it, which is exactly why it grades as Pristine without any debate. Read the IMEI and storage from the label on the outside of the box, keep your receipt, and leave the wrap alone.
