If you are buying an iPhone 18 Pro this September, the iPhone 17 in your hand is part of the payment. Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on Wednesday 9 September; pre-orders open on Saturday 12 September at 1 p.m. UK time and the phones go on sale on Friday 18 September. And of every phone in circulation right now, it is the one with the most money at risk over the next few weeks.
That is not a scare tactic — it is arithmetic. The iPhone 17 is the model an iPhone 18 Pro buyer would otherwise cross-shop, it is the highest-priced iPhone on our ladder, and it is about to be joined on the resale market by a great many identical handsets.
What Your iPhone 17 Is Worth Today#
Our top pristine quotes at the time of writing (9 September 2026). These are the ceiling for a flawless, unlocked handset at the highest storage tier.
| Model | Top quote (pristine) | Lowest storage tier |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | £905 | £696 |
| iPhone 17 Pro | £741 | £661 |
| iPhone 17 | £495 | £455 |
| iPhone Air | £477 | £423 |
The iPhone 17e, the entry model, runs £361 to £454 by storage.
Two things worth noticing.
Storage matters more than people expect. The gap between the lowest and highest storage tier on a 17 Pro Max is £209. If you are guessing at your storage instead of checking it, you could be planning around a number that is more than two hundred pounds out.
The Pro Max premium is enormous. An iPhone 17 Pro Max is worth £164 more than an iPhone 17 Pro and £410 more than a standard iPhone 17. That is also why it carries the most launch-window risk: the same percentage move costs twice as much in pounds.
Why Before Beats After#
A new iPhone does not make your iPhone 17 worse. On keynote day it takes the same photos it took the day before.
What changes is supply. Within days of an announcement, a large number of people commit to upgrading. Their old handsets — overwhelmingly iPhone 17s and 16s — reach the resale market together over the following four to six weeks. With plenty of stock to choose from, buyers can afford to be selective, and prices for the outgoing generation soften.
Selling before the announcement means selling into normal supply. Selling six weeks after it means selling into the glut. That is the entire argument, and it is why the advice is consistent every September.
What If You Need the Phone Until Launch Day?#
Most people do. You cannot be without a phone for a month, and selling early to catch a better price is a false economy if it leaves you stranded.
The answer is a price lock. Get your quote now, lock it, and post the handset the day your iPhone 18 arrives. The locked price is what protects you — market movement during those weeks becomes our problem rather than yours. Lock it this week and the 21 days run past pre-orders on 12 September and past the first deliveries from 18 September.
If your upgrade arrives as a second phone you do not need — a sealed iPhone 18 Pro from a carrier deal, say — that is the other way to sell, and we cover it in selling your iPhone upgrade for cash.

Get a quote and lock it
The price is held for 21 days, which covers the gap from the 9 September keynote to the first deliveries on 18 September.
Put the expiry in your calendar
A locked price only counts if the phone reaches us inside the window.
Keep it protected
Case and screen protector stay on until the moment you pack it. This is the single highest-value habit in this article.
Post it once your new phone is in your hand

Condition Beats Timing, Every Time#
Our smartphone grades apply roughly: Pristine 100%, Good 85%, Fair 70%, Poor around 26%.
On an iPhone 17 Pro Max, that ladder looks like this:
| Grade | Roughly worth |
|---|---|
| Pristine | £905 |
| Good | £769 |
| Fair | £633 |
| Poor | £235 |
The Fair-to-Poor step is roughly £400. One drop onto a hard floor can cost you more than the entire launch-window effect several times over.
So if you take one thing from this article, make it the boring one: keep the case on. It is worth more than any timing strategy.
Which iPhone 17 Should Sell First?#
In order of how much is at stake:
- iPhone 17 Pro Max — highest value, most direct competition from the incoming Pro Max, most to lose. Not sure whether to upgrade at all? See iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iPhone 17 Pro — same dynamic, slightly smaller numbers
- iPhone Air — a newer, less-established resale market, which cuts both ways
- iPhone 17 — meaningful but less dramatic; no direct standard-model replacement is expected until spring 2027
- iPhone 17e — the entry model, least sensitive to the calendar
There is a wrinkle worth knowing about the standard iPhone 17. Apple did not announce a standard iPhone 18 on 9 September — only the Pro models, with a foldable still reported and the standard 18 still reported for spring 2027. That means the standard iPhone 17 has no direct successor competing with it this autumn, which may make its price steadier than the Pro models' through the launch window.
That is a reason to be slightly less urgent about a standard iPhone 17. It is not a reason to forget about it.
Apple Trade In, Carrier, or Cash?#
| Route | Best for | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | Buying direct from Apple | Credit only — it spends at Apple and nowhere else |
| Carrier trade-in | Taking a new contract | Often paid as bill credit over 24–36 months |
| Private sale | Pristine, high-value handsets | Fees, scams, chargebacks, returns are yours to handle |
| Buyback | Speed, certainty, cash | Condition has to be described accurately |
A pristine iPhone 17 Pro Max will often fetch more on a well-run private sale — if you are prepared to manage buyers, postage risk and the occasional attempted scam on a £900-plus item. If you would rather have a fixed number, a tracked label and money in your account within days, a buyback is stronger on everything but the headline figure.
Cash also has an advantage credit does not: it spends anywhere. Apple credit locks you into buying from Apple, which removes carrier deals and refurbished options from the table before you have compared them.
