If you have been holding onto an ageing iPhone waiting for the iPhone 18, there is something you need to know now that Apple's keynote on Wednesday 9 September has happened: the phone you are waiting for is not the phone Apple has just announced.
The short version — Apple is reported to be splitting the iPhone range across two launches a year. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max were announced on 9 September and go on sale on 18 September. The standard iPhone 18 was not announced and is reported to have moved to spring 2027.
What Reporting Actually Says#
Through mid-2026, multiple independent supply-chain reports converged on the same picture: Apple is moving away from launching its entire iPhone range in one September burst.
The reasoning most often given is straightforward business logistics. A single annual launch concentrates enormous manufacturing, retail and support pressure into about six weeks. Splitting the range spreads that load, gives the budget models their own moment instead of being overshadowed, and puts a new iPhone in the news twice a year rather than once.
Apple has said nothing publicly. It has also reshaped its lineup before without warning — the Plus, the mini and the Air all arrived or departed on Apple's own schedule.
What This Means for You#
Which category you fall into changes the answer completely.
If you were going to buy a standard iPhone 18#
This is the group most affected. Your wait is reportedly about six months longer than you thought. Three realistic paths:

That third option has a hidden cost people consistently underestimate. If you were going to buy an iPhone 18 Pro#
Nothing changes for you. The Pro models arrived on Apple's usual schedule: announced on 9 September, pre-orders from Saturday 12 September at 1 p.m. UK time, on sale from Friday 18 September. Your only real decision is what to do with your current phone and when — and the answer is the same as every year: sell before the rush, not after. An iPhone that holds its value well still loses ground steadily, and it loses it fastest in the weeks around a new flagship. If you are waiting until spring 2027 for a standard iPhone 18, you are choosing to absorb two launch cycles of depreciation — September 2026 and whatever Apple does in early 2027.
That may still be the right call. A phone you actually want is worth paying for. Just make the decision knowing the number, rather than discovering it in six months.
Will iPhone 17 Get Cheaper?#
Partly, and not in the way most people expect.
Used and refurbished iPhone 17 prices should soften after the iPhone 18 Pro arrives, because trade-in supply rises and the model is no longer the newest thing available. That is the reliable part.
New iPhone 17 pricing is less predictable. Apple typically keeps some previous-generation models in the range at a reduced price, but which models survive and at what price is Apple's call. Models that get discontinued outright can become harder to buy new, not cheaper.
If your plan is "wait for the iPhone 17 to get cheap", the used and refurbished market is where that actually happens, and it happens in the weeks after the September event rather than before it.
