iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Should You Upgrade, and What Is Your 17 Pro Max Worth?

What Apple announced on 9 September, who should upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, who should hold, and what a 17 Pro Max is worth today (up to £905 Pristine).

iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Should You Upgrade, and What Is Your 17 Pro Max Worth?
In this guide11 sections

Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event was on Wednesday 9 September at 18:00 UK time. It brought the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the phone most likely to be in your hand while you watched is an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

So this is the practical question. Not "is the 18 Pro Max better" (it will be, it is a year newer) but "is the difference worth what it costs me, and what is my 17 Pro Max worth right now while I decide?"

Apple has confirmed the iPhone 18 Pro Max's name, storage tiers, colours and dates. Everything else about the new phone below is reported, not confirmed. Everything about your current phone is live pricing from our own ladder at the time of writing (9 September 2026).

What Apple Announced on 9 September#

Apple confirmed the name, storage tiers, colours and dates on 9 September. Treat the specification rows below as a summary of reporting, not confirmed fact.

Area iPhone 17 Pro Max (what you have) iPhone 18 Pro Max (reported unless marked confirmed)
Chip A19 Pro A20 Pro
Front of the phone Dynamic Island Smaller Dynamic Island
Main camera Fixed aperture Variable aperture
Display LTPO LTPO+
Battery Current capacity Reported bigger
Colours Current range Black, silver, glacier, burgundy (confirmed)
Price Launched in the UK at £1,199 (256GB) £1,299 (256GB), up to £2,499 (2TB)

The variable-aperture camera is the headline. It lets the main lens narrow in bright light for deeper depth of field, or open wide in low light. Whether it changes your photos depends on how much you shoot and how often you fight with background blur.

The rest is normal year-on-year progress. Faster chip, a little more screen, a little more battery. Meaningful over a two or three year gap, hard to feel over one.

Who Should Upgrade#

Camera-first users. If the camera is the reason you buy a Pro Max, variable aperture is the one reported change that is not incremental. It is the feature most likely to justify a one-year jump.

iPhone 14 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max owners. Two or three generations of chip, display, battery and camera improvements stack up. Coming from a 14 or 15, the 18 Pro Max would feel like a different phone. And your current handset still puts real money towards it: an iPhone 15 Pro Max is up to £511 Pristine today, and a 14 Pro Max up to £401 Pristine.

Anyone whose battery has faded. If your 17 Pro Max battery health has slipped and you do not fancy a battery replacement, a new phone with a reported bigger battery solves two problems at once.

Who Should Hold#

Most iPhone 17 Pro Max owners. Your phone is a year old. Same size class, a very capable camera, and a chip that will not feel slow for years. Unless the variable-aperture camera speaks to you, a year is a short gap to pay a four-figure price to close.

iPhone 17 Pro owners. Same logic, and you chose the smaller phone deliberately. The 18 Pro is your natural next step, and the same one-year rule applies.

What Your iPhone 17 Pro Max Is Worth Right Now#

Our Pristine quotes at the time of writing (9 September 2026), for an unlocked handset with no marks, by storage:

iPhone 17 Pro Max Pristine quote
256GB £696
512GB £801
1TB £841
2TB £905

Pristine is the ceiling. Our grades then step down: Good is roughly 85%, Fair roughly 70%, Poor roughly 26%. On the 2TB model that is roughly £769 Good, £633 Fair and £235 Poor. The Fair-to-Poor step is the expensive one, and it is the reason the case stays on until the day you pack it.

Check your storage before you plan around a number. The gap between a 256GB and a 2TB 17 Pro Max is £209 at Pristine, so guessing is costly.

Why the Price Moves After a Launch#

A keynote does not make your 17 Pro Max worse. It takes the same photos on 10 September as it did on 8 September.

What changes is supply. Within days of an announcement, a large number of people commit to upgrading. Their old phones, mostly 17 Pro and Pro Max models this year, reach the resale market together over the following four to six weeks. Buyers of used handsets suddenly have plenty to choose from, and prices for the outgoing generation soften.

That is a supply shock, and it is the whole mechanism. A quote locked before the wave puts that movement on us, not you.

The Real Cost of Upgrading: A Worked Example#

Apple's UK price for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is £1,299 for 256GB, £100 more than last year's 17 Pro Max at the same storage. The example below keeps £1,199 for scale, so add £100 to every net figure for the 256GB model.

Set your 17 Pro Max against it:

Your 17 Pro Max (Pristine, after inspection) Net cost at £1,199
256GB, £696 £503
512GB, £801 £398
1TB, £841 £358
2TB, £905 £294

Two things fall out of that. Selling a Pristine handset covers a large slice of the sticker price whatever Apple charges. And condition is worth real money: dropping to Good adds roughly £105 to £135 to each net figure. That gap is worth protecting for the next two weeks.

What Is My iPhone Worth Today#

If you are upgrading from something other than a 17 Pro Max, these are our Pristine tops at the time of writing (9 September 2026), at the largest storage tier. Your exact figure depends on storage and condition.

Model Up to (Pristine) Live quote
iPhone 17 Pro Max £905 Sell iPhone 17 Pro Max
iPhone 17 Pro £741 Sell iPhone 17 Pro
iPhone 16 Pro Max £711 Sell iPhone 16 Pro Max

iPhone 15 Pro Max £511 Sell iPhone 15 Pro Max

Prices move with the market. These are a snapshot, not a promise.

Two Ways to Fund the Upgrade#

Path one: sell the phone you are upgrading from#

You are buying the 18 Pro Max and your 17 Pro Max is part of the payment.

  1. Check the model and storage

Settings, General, About. Then check battery health under Settings, Battery.

  2. Lock a quote today

Get your iPhone 17 Pro Max quote and lock it. The price holds for 21 days.

  3. Decide on what Apple confirmed

The names, storage tiers, colours and dates are official. Your quote is already protected either way.

  4. Keep the case on

The Fair-to-Poor drop costs more than any launch-week movement.

  5. Post it when the new phone arrives

Back up, sign out of your Apple Account, turn off Find My, erase, then send. Free tracked Royal Mail label, or drop it in to us in Swindon.

We pay by bank transfer the same working day after inspection. Cash, not store credit, so it spends on a carrier deal, on Apple, or anywhere else.

Path two: sell the iPhone 18 Pro Max itself#

Some people will get an iPhone 18 Pro Max through a carrier upgrade and would rather have the money. That is a simpler transaction.

A sealed, unopened handset is graded Pristine, the top of our ladder. Once the new models are live on our site, you get a quote, lock it, and either post it free or bring it in. We wipe every device we handle and pay by bank transfer after inspection. The full walkthrough, including what "sealed" means for grading and what to do about the carrier's paperwork, is in our guide to selling your iPhone upgrade in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth upgrading to from an iPhone 17 Pro Max?

For most 17 Pro Max owners, probably not on day one. The reported changes are a faster chip, a smaller Dynamic Island, a variable-aperture main camera and a bigger battery. Those are real upgrades, but the 17 Pro Max is a year old and still a very good phone. If you are not camera-first, holding a year is the cheaper decision.

How much is an iPhone 17 Pro Max worth in the UK right now?

At the time of writing (9 September 2026), our Pristine quotes for an iPhone 17 Pro Max ran from £696 for the 256GB model up to £905 for the 2TB. Good condition is roughly 85% of the Pristine figure, Fair roughly 70%, Poor roughly 26%. Prices move with the market, so check the live quote for your exact storage and condition.

Will my iPhone 17 Pro Max lose value after the iPhone 18 launch?

Historically, yes. It is not the spec sheet that does it. Within days of a keynote a large number of people commit to upgrading, and their old handsets reach the resale market together over the following weeks. More supply means buyers can be choosier, and prices for the outgoing generation soften. Locking a quote before that happens protects your number for 21 days.

Can I lock a price now and send my iPhone 17 Pro Max after the iPhone 18 arrives?

Yes. A TechLoop quote is held for 21 days from the moment you lock it. That comfortably covers the gap between the 9 September keynote and the 18 September on-sale date, so you keep your phone until the new one is in your hand and still get today's price, subject to inspection.

What if I get an iPhone 18 Pro Max through a carrier upgrade and do not want it?

We buy sealed iPhones. An unopened, factory-sealed handset is graded Pristine, which is the top of our ladder. Get a quote once the model is live on our site, post it free or drop it in to us in Swindon, and we pay by bank transfer the same working day after inspection.
